“And what happens tomorrow morning?” is one of the key questions South Holland District Nightstop asks when a teenager is being referred to them for an emergency bed.
Scheme co-ordinator, chairman and treasurer Brian Sapsford says: “Someone else has to look after that person once they leave our care. The discussion can go on for quite a while, but they need to ensure that young person goes somewhere tomorrow morning. Generally whoever referred them to us takes them back because they need to carry on with them.
“They would be looking at the reasons they are homeless. The council may be looking at some other form of short or long-term accommodation, depending on the reasons for the homelessness and the age of the person.
“But someone has to work with that young person to either relieve that problem or find some other solution, and it’s not us.”
Brian’s work involves taking care of paperwork, sometimes checking new volunteers and updating the national database.
