Algarkirk works as village because people get on

Algarkirk can boast an award-winning business in Pinchins Farm Shop.

The business, run by Henny and James Pinchin, came out with three prizes in the British Pie Awards, the latest in a number of tributes to the products made mostly from meat and vegetables grown on their own farm.

Pie-maker Henny earned silver for her beef and ale pie, and bronze awards for chicken and ham and pork pie – not bad going when the event was held in the home of the pie, Melton Mowbray, and she was up against 983 entries.

Henny, who is also on the village hall committee and has been a parish councillor for two years, believes the addition of their own butcher, Bob Cowell, to the farm shop and cafe has made a big difference to the business.

Bob is not just an asset to the farm shop though, but to the village community generally, because he has performed as a singer at the village hall twice.

Penny agrees that everyone joins in and helps out at events held at the village hall, such as the Christmas dinner organised for as many villagers as can make it.

She says: “It functions as a village because everybody gets on really well.”
