‘Our cash goes to millionaires’

London millionaires get nearly three times more Government cash than ordinary working people in Lincolnshire.

Independent county councillor Chris Brewis says the present Government admits Lincolnshire is short-changed by £20million a year.

For each Government £1 received by Lincolnshire local authorities, London’s millionaire belt – Westminster – gets nearly three times that, £2.63.

Higher handouts go to the London boroughs of Camden (£2.66), Tower Hamlets (£2.79) and Hackney (£2.88).

Rural South Somerset and Breckland in Norfolk get the lowest, just 80p per head.

Coun Brewis, who represents Sutton Bridge, said: “No government since the Second World War has ever really listened to the rural counties of England and even the present lot admit that we are short-changed by about £20million per year.

“That money which we ought to have – surprise, surprise – they will not take it away from the areas which get too much, such as Buckinghamshire, Oxford and Surrey.

“Oh, but that’s where many of the ministers and MPs live, isn’t it?”

As well as London boroughs receiving nearly three times as much as Lincolnshire, cities like Nottingham, Birmingham and Liverpool get more than £2 per head.

Coun Brewis said: “We none of us consider this to be fair, but all governments of all shades and parties have always hit the rural areas first and hardest.”
