Under fire energy giant could hand over some cash

Energy giant Centrica, which owns British Gas, might now give some community cash to Sutton Bridge following completion of its £1billion offshore Lincs Wind Farm.

Centrica has come under fire from parish councillors because, so far, it’s the only energy company that’s done work at Sutton Bridge without offering the village a penny.

The first gas-fired power station delivered £1million for community funds, the controversial biomass gasifier if built will give residents cut-price electricity and a new power station in the pipeline is expected to deliver another big cash windfall.

Centrica’s cables for the Lincs Wind Farm meant the seabank flood defence had to be breached – and the company will breach the bank again if it presses ahead with a much bigger scheme at Race Bank.

A Centrica spokesman said: “Throughout the construction period of the Lincs Wind Farm, we have provided regular updates to the Sutton Bridge and Wingland Parish Council, and we have also had preliminary discussions about maximising long-term, sustainable benefits of the development to local communities.

“Now that construction of the wind farm is completed, we intend to discuss this in more detail with the parish councillors.”
