Spalding man found dead in water named

UPDATE TUESDAY 4.30PM: A man whose body was found in water near Pode Hole Pumping Station, Spalding, has been named today.

The body of Douglas Thomas Thompson (78) of Carrington Road, Spalding, was found by drainage workers a week ago but police delayed naming him before relatives had been notified.

A spokesman for South Lincolnshire Coroner’s Office said tests were still being carried out to establish how Mr Thompson died.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 13 4PM: Police have today confirmed that a body found in water near Pode Hole Pumping Station, Spalding, is of a man aged in his 70s.

The death of the man, whose body was found by drainage workers yesterday lunchtime, is being treated as unexplained and police are trying to notify his relatives.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Welland and Deeping Internal Drainage Board said: “At approximately 1pm on Tuesday, our workmen noticed what they thought was a body floating in Vernatts Drain which is outside our depot.

“We informed the police who then attended the scene and our condolences go out to the man’s family.”

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 13 9.30AM: A man’s body has been found in water near Pode Hole Pumping Station, Spalding, with police treating his death as “unexplained.”

Drainage workers found the body at about 1pm yesterday and a police under water search team were called in to recover it from the water before the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said they had a good idea who the man was but they are currently trying to inform family and friends, with a formal identification to be carried out “at the earliest opportunity.”

The spokesman added: “A post mortem examination will also be carried out to establish how the man died but until that time we are treating the death as unexplained.”
