New year’s resolutions are slipping by the wayside with people saying they haven’t enough willpower to carry them through – or simply don’t have time.
A survey of the nation’s top 40 resolutions in 2013 put “read more books” at the top of the list and “do a bungee jump” at the bottom, but it seems we’re focusing on personal improvement if we do anything at all.
Jayne Donohoe (33), from Holbeach, said: “I haven’t made a new year’s resolution because I always break them. I am a vegan, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink so I can’t say I am going to give up anything.”
Lorry driver Robert Aldrich (59), from Spalding, is building on the success of his 2013 new year’s resolution.
He said: “I decided to go the gym and watch what I eat and I have stuck to it. I go to the gym twice a week because of the shifts I work and do about an hour at a time.”
Our second success story came from Jasmine Taylor (19), from Pinchbeck, who said: “I actually made the same one every year, which was to stop biting my finger nails. I have bitten my nails for as long as I can remember, probably the last ten, 11 or 12 years.”
Jasmine is now sporting a beautiful French manicure and says her 2014 resolution is to lose a little weight.
Ross Smart (19), from Spalding, told us: “I don’t have a new year’s resolution because I never keep one. I don’t see the point in making something that you are not going to keep to.
“Giving up chocolate, I think, was the one I came up with last year, but that just went out of the window.”
Barbara Broughton (59), from Boston, isn’t making a resolution this year.
She said: “I don’t smoke – I only drink about three times a week, but I’m not going to give that up.”
Kirsty Butters (30), from Spalding, said: “I haven’t made one this year because I have got so much going on.”
