Wingland Airfield has been given the go-ahead for a building to store microlight aircraft on land in Gedney Dyke.

Plans put in by Wingland Aircraft Club for an 11 feet building in which to store an Ikarus C42 aircraft were approved by South Holland District Council at a planning meeting last Wednesday.

A number of people living nearby had written to the council opposing the plans due to concerns over increased noise brought on by more microlight enthusiasts using the airfield.

There was also fears over safety after two men were hurt when a microlight crashed while coming into land at Wingland Airfield last June.

But a report from planning officer David Gedney for the meeting said: “The noise characteristics associated with microlights can make them annoying and intrusive.

“However, it is recognised that such activity is periodic and, moreover, the building to which this application relates is small scale and solely for the storage of a single fixed wing microlight.

“It would be difficult to argue that the building has resulted in an intensification of activities upon the site.”

Coun Rita Rudkin, who voted for the plans, said: “It’s a pleasure to sit and watch the microlights and the storage building is on land that lends itself very well to an airfield.”
