Spalding’s former Wimpy restaurant could become the new home for Lloyds Pharmacy later this year.

The pharmacy chain is looking to switch its current business from Bridge Street to the Market Place restaurant, which closed in April 2011 and has remained empty ever since.

A spokesman for Lloyds Pharmacy said: “The proposed move is only a short distance, but we believe that the new pharmacy would be more accessible to all customers.

“The larger premises would also mean that we could provide a greater range of healthcare services and products to benefit patients in the area.

“We have submitted an application to the NHS England area team to allow for our NHS contract to be moved.

“This is currently out for consultation and we are awaiting the outcome, which usually takes several months.

“Once we have had feedback from this and the planning application, we will then be able to look at when the relocation might take place.”

The company has not commented on whether it will employ more people if it switches to a bigger site.

The Market Place building has twice been run as a Wimpy by franchisees.

The first business closed in September 2006, with the loss of nine jobs, but the restaurant reopened in September 2009 when a South African-based businessman, Willie Opperman, took over.

Mr Opperman created 25 jobs at the 100-seater, air conditioned restaurant but trade fell off towards the end of 2010 and there were just five employees when it closed its doors for the last time.
