POLICE followed a drink-driver the wrong way along the one-way section of Spalding’s High Street.

Aaron Hardacre (20), of Longrigg Walk, Swineshead, pulled up outside The Cley Hall Hotel with police just behind.

Rebecca Ritson, prosecuting, told Spalding magistrates the officer felt he had to follow Hardacre to help minimise the risk of harm.

Police first spotted Hardacre in the junction of Love Lane and Churchgate at 3.28am and he appeared to go the opposite way to his intended direction to avoid them. He rode along Churchgate and entered High Street against the traffic lights.

Hardacre admitted driving with 57 microgrammes of alcohol in breath – 22mcg above the limit – and was disqualified for 12 months. He must pay a £160 fine, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. The ban will be cut by three months if he completes a course.

Solicitor Daven Naghen, mitigating, said Hardacre wasn’t avoiding police and simply lost. He had been home to bed that night but went out again because a friend was stranded in Spalding.
