Gleed School student Ben McGurk isn’t afraid of tackling a situation if one arises during a school day.

Ben (15) can remember dark days when students were hiding round corners and having a crafty cigarette.

He said: “You always knew even if they got away with it because you could smell it on their clothes.

“It doesn’t happen now because the teachers have stopped it, but if there is anything troubling a student I always try to sort it by supporting them or informing a teacher.

Ben is part of the Junior Leadership Team – a new voice at the school that is tackling behaviour issues by dealing with student concerns.

As well as behaviour, it leads on the environment, teaching and learning and fundraising.

The Senior Prefect Team is part of this and acts as ambassadors for the school.

Headteacher Will Scott said: “I firmly believe in having students as leaders and developing their talents.

“There is a World Challenge Project team who are preparing for an exciting trip to Tazmania.

“We regularly have staff and students doing outreach work in local primary schools as well as hugely popular and successful sporting teams.

“We’ve just heard our mixed gymnasium team has made it through to the nationals.

“Arts and drama continues to go from strength to strength.

“They are already planning auditions for next summer’s show ‘Hairspray’.

“The Parents and Friends Association has really taken off and consists of parents, staff and friends of the school.

“Their involvement has already had a positive impact within the local community.

“They are always looking for volunteers to join the group and that is how the community can help us now – there is work to be done but so much to be proud of.”
