Town bunting could have extended stay

BUNTING could be flying in Spalding from May to prepare for “a summer of celebration”.

Councillors are hoping they can talk Springfields into not taking the bunting down after the flower festival and keeping it up for three months through the summer.

This would allow the town to continue flying the flags for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Torch Relay.

Jason Rooke, of Spalding Chamber of Commerce, said it would cost Springfields £2,000 to take the bunting down after the flower festival in May and another expense to put it up again in June .

He said: “We are getting ready for a summer of celebration. Should we ask if the bunting could stay up until August? Some of it needs replacing and maybe, if the forum offers to replace it with some new, they would consider it.”

The cost of replacing the worn out bunting was about £396, he said.

Forum chairman Coun George Aley said members had each put £150 into a community care fund and suggested the cost could come out of this.

It was also suggested the fund could be used for a donation towards the cost of two town clear-ups on April 29 for the flower festival and May 27 for the jubilee.

Mr Rooke said volunteers were helping with the clean-ups but £120 could be needed to pay the town’s Community Payback teams to take part.

The forum agreed to offer to finance the replacement of the bunting and, if required, Payback teams to clean up.

Worthy causes were also invited to bid for the fund. Any groups interested should email galey@sholland.gov.uk
