RESIDENTS beside Long Oliver’s Road in Donington fear their lives will be a misery now more lorries will use the narrow road to get to a new 600sq m grain store.
They say farm lorries have cracked their walls and noise from the new fan house will add to nuisance suffered from a fan on an existing grain store.
John Grant (Donington) was given consent to build the new grain store at Caythorpe Farm by South Holland District Council planning committee on Tuesday.
Resident Andy Allcock says 40ft lorries weighing 42 tonnes pass three metres away from one of his windows.
Speaking on behalf of 33 residents, he told the planning committee there had been many accidents near Long Oliver’s Road junction with the A52. Some drivers turned in by mistake and reversed out, while others braked late because they were taken by surprise by vehicles turning in as there were no signs to say the junction was there.
He said: “You are turning an already dangerous situation into a fatality waiting to happen.”
Mr Allcock told the Free Press he had helped two women out of their cars in two separate accidents near the junction and one of the cars landed on its roof.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Coun Bob Creese proposed an amendment for the application to be deferred so measures could be investigated that might mitigate residents’ concerns, including widening the road and putting up signs.
But his amendment fell because the proposal to permit the plan had already been moved and seconded – and Coun Creese was suggesting something completely fresh rather than actually amending the proposal.
County Highways had no objection to the plan.
A farming company speaker told the committee the volume and speed of traffic on the A52 was the main reason for noise along that stretch.
