Rotary returns to street of no sweets

VOLUNTEERS behind a charity sleigh run have made a second visit to one Spalding street to spread some Christmas cheer.

The Rotary Club of South Holland returned to Cygnet Court after seeing a letter in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press written by parent Nick Skinner, who said he was “disgusted” children were not given any sweets.

Fundraising chairman John Atkinson said volunteers had used up 48 tins of sweets this year – and Mr Skinner’s children were missed by mistake.

He said: “We went to put it right. We left a tin of sweets there with him and we took a small reindeer with us.”

He added: “We would like to thank everyone who has given us support this year.”

It’s estimated between £8-9,000 has been raised by this year’s sleigh run.

Mr Skinner’s letter has prompted much debate among our readers – many angry that he had complained.

Online user Sally45 posted at www.spaldingtoday.co.uk: “If you feel so strongly, why not volunteer to do it next year, (on a freezing cold night) and fund the giving of sweets?

“My daughter was delighted that she saw Father Christmas and talked to him outside our house; she didn’t have any expectations of sweets or presents from him as he does that on Christmas Eve, not beforehand in the road.”
