Holbeach hotel has fight to keep licence

POLICE have forced a review of the premises licence for The Chequers Hotel in Holbeach following vicious attacks, mass fights involving up to 20 people throwing bottles and under-age drinking.

Officers say there’s a pattern of pub bosses failing to help with their inquiries – and claiming not to have seen anything – and of injured people and witnesses not coming forward.

Matters came to a head on June 19 this year when two men were hurt in vicious assaults.

One man was punched, kicked and stamped upon before being dragged outside and dumped in an alley. The second man was repeatedly punched before being “knocked out cold” with one blow.

Police met a wall of silence from pub bosses who at first denied all knowledge – although CCTV footage later revealed they were there at the time.

The review takes place tomorrow in the council chamber at South Holland District Council’s Priory Road offices, Spalding, when police will ask a licensing panel to review the licence on grounds of:

• prevention of crime and disorder

• public safety

• protection of children from harm
