BELLS in Spalding and Sutton St James will start ringing at precisely 8.12am on Friday to mark the start of the Olympics.

The three-minute “blast” is part of a nationwide “All the Bells” celebration which anyone can join by ringing a handbell, doorbell or bike bell.

The tower captain at Spalding’s St Mary and St Nicolas Church, Sue Slater, said the church will open so people can go along and watch the team in action.

She said: “We will be ringing the bells up and down again.”

The church has its own radio controlled clock so it can be sure to chime in with the national celebration, which will be broadcast live on TV and radio to an estimated audience of more than ten million people.

Joint churchwardens at Sutton St James Sally Clifton and Pauline Stebbings emailed the Spalding Guardian to say: “Just to let you know we will be waking up the village on Friday morning ringing the bells at SSJ Church.”

Mrs Clifton said: “We like to ring for the patriotic events.”

The Sutton St James team will ring call changes – and some will ring just before they go to work.
