THIS photograph was taken in 1941 after the opening of a temporary pre-fabricated store to replace the Woolworth’s building in Spalding destroyed during a German raid.
It was submitted by Frank Slater, of Western Avenue, Holbeach, who says the image shows staff and the construction team of F W Woolworth & Co Ltd in Spalding (store number 318), with manager Fred Rennison sitting in the front row.
At that time Frank worked for Woolworth’s in the stock room, working his way up to become stockroom manager before he was called up in 1943 to serve with the RAF. During the war he trained as an electrician and so never returned to Woolworth’s.
The original store was totally destroyed by fire during the night of May 11-12, 1941, following a German raid on the town.
Frank says most of the women in the image were from Spalding and he would love to hear from any of them that are still around.
