GIRLS from Sir John Gleed School, Spalding, have grown a brand new friendship with elderly residents at a town care home.
The girls created a 5ft 8in tall fabric tree complete with multi-coloured leaves, which are fully interchangeable so residents of Southfield House can keep on changing the look of the tree.
School staff member Sue Rees said the school made the tree at the request of Julie Goddard, from the Woolram Wygate care home, along with cushion and chair covers.
Mrs Rees said: “The majority of the branches are arm high so it’s easy to remove the leaves.
“It’s the first time that we have been contacted like this and it was a super project for the Year 9s to be involved in.”
Youngsters stitched leaves individually – some embroidered, some plain and some crinkly and some smooth – and saw the finished look when the tree was assembled to be presented to the home.
Mrs Rees said the home has some patients with dementia and the tree will stimulate their senses and evoke memories.
