Security guards could tackle vandalism

A PRIVATE security firm could be hired to help stamp out vandalism in Sutton Bridge.

The parish council is considering the move after trouble around The Curlew Centre in Bridge Road and in other parts of the village.

A fire was lit in the car park at the weekend – and there’s been other damage as well as problems with litter.

The parish council has an office at the centre and also holds its meetings there.

Chairman Coun John Grimwood said locking the gates after the centre closes at night might be the answer for a start.

But Coun Gary Croxford told the meeting: “The only thing is by locking these gates you are going to send the problem elsewhere.”

Coun Rowe said: “Three or four years ago, we employed a security firm and they did open and close these barriers but they also looked at other areas of the village.

“It could work quite well and it wasn’t overly expensive.”

The parish council agreed on Tuesday to investigate the cost of bringing in a private security firm and also to ask Long Sutton Parish Council if it would be interested in joining in and sharing the costs. Coun Grimwood said: “It would be beneficial to both parishes I would think.”

Earlier this summer large sections of the fencing around the children’s play area at the back of the centre were pulled up and nails were left sticking out.
