ITALY may be renowned for its cuisine but cookery classes in school were a complete novelty for a visiting party of Italian exchange students who were entertained at Spalding’s Sir John Gleed School.

The youngsters asked if they could make some typically English dishes and created a feast in the cookery rooms at the girls’ campus.

Among dishes they made and tried were three soups – carrot and coriander, leek and potato and pea and ham – cheese straws, Victoria sandwich, and scones served with strawberries and cream.

There was also time to make some mouthwatering shortbread.

Staff member Sue Rees said: “They sat down and ate it all for lunch and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

“They don’t have cookery in Italian schools so they wanted to experience cooking some typically English dishes.”
