Council leader and community champion named in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The Leader of South Holland District Council and a Donington community worker for more than 30 years have both been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Coun Gary Porter (52) has been awarded a CBE for services to local government and Margaret Kenworthy is to receive a British Empire Medal for services to the community in Donington.

Leader of the council since 2003, Coun Porter is also chairman of the Conservative Councillors’ Association and leader of the Local Government Association’s Conservative group.

He said: “The award has been given to me, but it’s also for the rest of the people who are here at the district council.

“I’m pleased because it’s an acknowledgement of the good work all the councillors in South Holland have done and since I became leader in 2003, I’ve been surrounded by good people who do good work.”

Mrs Kenworthy (65) runs the Ruby Hunt Centre in Donington which is used by a variety of community groups and she has been actively involved in the village since she moved to Lincolnshire in 1982.

She said: “I’m amzed and I knew absolutely nothing about it until I received a letter at the beginning of May from the Cabinet Office.

“Someone has obviously nominated me and i feel privileged to be named in the Birthday Honours List.”

The full list was announced on Saturday which also happens to be Mrs Kenworthy’s 66th birthday.

Weekend blitz on drinkers

Police dealt with 20 street drinkers in a weekend blitz in Spalding.

It was one of the busiest weekends so far in Operation Trunk – and sparked a flurry of support on Twitter after one disgruntled Tweeter asked police if they had nothing better to do.

Back came almost 20 Tweets with messages such as “keep up the good work”, “please please do not stop targeting the drinkers” and “I think you are having an effect on street drinking, Spalding so much better to walk around now because of your good work”.

Police tackled 75 street drinkers in April, 50 in May and 35 so far this month.

Community policing inspector Jim Tyner said police now receive far fewer calls from the public about street drinking, but that suggests police are succeeding and the street drinkers are having less impact on people going about their normal business.

He said: “I was recently told that market traders are returning to Spalding Market since Operation Trunk has cleared the shopping areas of drinkers. That sounds like success to me.”

Insp Tyner said people are still drinking in the town centre, but they tend to have moved out of the view of the public.

“Street drinking is a complex social issue with no quick wins,” he said.

Leading Spalding councillor Roger Gambba-Jones was among Tweeters backing the police blitz on street drinkers.

After one follower messaged police to ask if they had nothing better to do Coun Gambba-Jones sent a message: “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Keep up your good work pls, it’s what the vast majority of ppl want 2C.”

Another Tweeter applauded police both for their action on street drinkers and communication with the public on Twitter.

Insp Tyner said: “I am a great supporter of police use of social media.

“Effective engagement with all parts of the community is at the heart of community policing.

“Using social media offers a different way of engaging with people in our communities who may not normally come into contact with police officers or PCSOs.

“My favourite Tweet is from a member of the public who said ‘you and your PCSOs are changing Spalding and Twitter gets the message out there’.”

Insp Tyner said at least three of the new CCTV volunteers came forward as a result of a police appeal on Twitter.

One of Saturday’s police messages on Operation Trunk told followers: “Seized another bottle of whiskey and a can of lager. Four more people moved on, that makes 13 today.”

Police have only limited powers to deal with street drinkers under a Designated Public Places Order.

It’s not an offence to drink alcohol in the area, but police can ask them to stop drinking and pour away their booze.

Anyone who fails to comply without a reasonable excuse can be served with a fixed penalty notice or a fine up to £500.

Flaming June? Not flaming likely!

The year’s inconsistent weather continued today with hailstorms, thunder, lightening and fierce winds.

Spaldingtoday.co.uk editor Jeremy Ransome captured these scenes near Long Sutton on Saturday afternoon as hail thundered down.

The weather should settle down over the next few days, however, with sunshine and clouds but no rain predicted, temperatures varying between 10 and 20 degrees.

Faith gets fresh air in Spalding

Catholics in Spalding brought their faith out into the open when more than 200 people marched through the town centre on Sunday.

The Blessed Sacrament Procession, which symbolises the Eucharist or Holy Communion first served by Jesus Christ to his disciples, was the first of its kind in Spalding for 100 years to mark the Roman Catholic Church’s Year of Faith.

Children and adults marched from St Norbert’s Church in St Thomas’s Road to Market Place where an open-air service was led by parish priest Father Jim Burke.

He said: “It was a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see people coming from their homes, many armed with cameras and videos, to watch what was going on and catch a glimpse of the procession.” Photo (TIM WILSON): SG090613-124TW.

A new Sutton Bridge LIVES volunteer was called to a medical emergency just two minutes after he reported for his first duty on Tuesday.

First responder Gary Croxford texted the LIVES control room at 7.30pm and moments later his phone rang with a Red 1 emergency – the more serious of two categories, demanding a response within eight minutes.

The father-of-three was quickly on the spot and dealt with the incident until ambulance paramedics took over.

Gary (47) and LIVES bosses cannot divulge the nature of the drama because of patient confidentiality, but it is understood the patient was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Gary said: “I literally completed the text and the phone rang two minutes later.

“I was a little bit nervous at the beginning because I didn’t know what to expect, but once I had left and gone on the call I settled down, really, and just got on with the call.

“The ambulance did come within a few minutes of me being there as well and the ambulance crew were brilliant – they took over responsibility once they attended. They were very, very good.”

Gary is a training officer at Wingland Foods but was a first aid instructor in the military.

Two more LIVES volunteers will be on duty in Sutton Bridge by the end of this week and it’s likely there will be six by the end of July.

The group was set up following complaints about late arriving ambulances in the village and has the support of the parish council.

Gary, a parish councillor, said: “I think people will be happier that there’s someone in the village to give support between the call and the time of the ambulance arriving. I think it will bring some peace of mind to some people.”

Steven Hyde, from LIVES, said Gary got to the emergency very quickly and the ambulance crew were there very quickly after him.

“I am sure that Gary is going to be very busy until we get the rest of the group up and running,” said Steven.

LIVES are looking for more volunteers to join the Sutton Bridge group as some of the original dozen have dropped out.

There’s around a 40 per cent drop out across the county from people who step forward and then decide it’s not for them.

First responders have three days’ training and carry kit including defibrillators, oxygen, space blankets for keeping people warm and bandages.

l Volunteers can call Nigel Adams on 07876 502999.

Not enough provision for cyclists in Spalding

A Spalding action group is objecting to an area marked for development in the town because it says there is not enough cycling provision.

PEDALS is preparing to oppose the building of 5,000 new homes on the north side of the Vernatts Drain, together with a new ring road around the west side of Spalding.

The development is outlined in a joint Local Plan prepared by South Holland District Council and Boston Borough Council to influence where housing, employment, retail and other types of development can take place over the next 20 years.

Among the comments made by PEDALS is that, in spite of the flat character of the landscape, the Plan fails to highlight how the area is highly suitable for the sustainable transport of cycling; the report has scant regard for what will be the gradual increase of pedal power; and a pavement and cycle way will be needed from the developments across the ring road.

Residents have until Friday, June 28, to view the Local Plan at South Holland District Council offices in Priory Road.

Kicked hotel door window after 16 pints

A drunken man kicked and smashed a door window after he was barred from going back into The Deeping Stage Hotel at Market Deeping.

Hotel regular Adam Manning-Coe (22) was asked to get off the dance floor due to drunkenness on May 10.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, told Spalding magistrates that Maning-Coe went outside and the door supervisor decided not to let him return.

The supervisor said Manning-Coe started to get argumentative, pushed past the doormen and kicked the bottom glass panel to the left of the door, smashing it.

Miss Stace said Manning-Coe told police he was drunk at the time and had about 16 pints of beer that night.

Manning-Coe, of Deeping St James Street, Northborough, was conditionally discharged for 12 months and ordered to pay £321.60 compensation to the hotel. He must also pay a £15 victim surcharge.

He pleaded guilty to criminal damage.

Through his solicitor, Anita Toal, Manning-Coe queried the cost of replacing the window as a friend smashed the same window a couple of years ago and paid £80.

But Miss Stace said it was specially toughened glass and the hotel had presented an invoice for £321.60.

Mrs Toal said Manning-Coe “went a little over the top” because he drank far too much.

Drug problem man is fined

Police responding to a report of a rave being set up at Moulton Marsh searched a man and found he had cannabis in his possession.

Spalding magistrates heard police went to Middle Marsh Road just after 10pm on March 30.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, said Mark Stockdale was told he was going to be searched and produced a small plastic tub containing cannabis bush.

Stockdale told police he was going to smoke it.

Solicitor Anita Toal, mitigating, said Stockdale had a history of drug problems, but his last offence was in 2009.

He had worked hard with the probation service to cut down on drugs. In the past he used ketamine, LSD and more serious drugs but now only cannabis.

Mrs Toal said his last offence was in 2009.

Stockdale (27), of Rowan Avenue, Spalding, was fined £65 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. Magistrates ordered destruction of the cannabis.

Matron invited to palace

A community hospital matron has had a very special thank you for her kindness and dedication to the variety of services she has supported over her career.

Louise Johnson, a Matron for Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS), spent an afternoon at the Queen’s garden party after being nominated to attend by her colleagues.

Louise said: “I was very proud when I was nominated to attend the garden party at Buckingham Palace, as to me I am just doing my job which I absolutely love.

“Being a Matron gives me the opportunity to ensure high quality services are provided to our local population and the care is the best it can possibly be.”

Louise has been a registered nurse for 15 years and now oversees the inpatient ward, minor injuries unit and outpatients department at Spalding’s Johnson Community Hospital, and also the independent living team, specialist nursing and community nursing in South Holland.

She has previously worked in Lincolnshire’s acute hospitals and in the community.

Louise attended the event with her mum, Valerie Brocklehurst.

“The Queen has a really nice smile and she looked lovely,” said Louise. “She seemed really interested in everyone and seemed so happy to be there.

Shops getting residents into the party mood

South Holland is becoming a district of party animals.

If residents are not dressing up for 80s and 90s parties or hen nights, they are off to masquerade balls and murder mystery evenings.

As the festival season gets into full swing, it’s giving the owners of joke shops in Spalding and Donington plenty to laugh about.

Partner Gary Parkinson and his wife, Sarah, started Parkys Pranks in The Crescent, Spalding, two years ago and have just opened a second shop in Donington Market Place.

Gary said: “When I decided to open the shop in Spalding everyone was down because of the recession.

“We wanted to do something to bring some fun back into the world.”

Fancy dress is popular at the shops, which also sell jokes, gifts, gadgets and magic. Although there is a website – www.parkyspranks.co.uk – at the moment it is just to promote the businesses.

However, Gary thinks it hasn’t held him back. He said: “Customers come and see me from as far away as Peterborough and Lincoln because they like customer service.

“You don’t get the personal touch online.

“My customers know that if I don’t have something in stock I’ll try to get it from them.”

The shop in Spalding is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and the one in Donington on Mondays to Thursdays from 9am to 6pm.

Youngsters’ day of activities for diabetes

Youngsters learned about diabetes during a day of dressing up and activities tied in with an awareness week.

St Bartholomew’s Primary School and Ladybirds Pre-school in West Pinchbeck joined forces to wear blue – the diabetes awareness “colour” – after being approached by Gemma Robinson, mum of four-year-old pre-school youngster Faith, who suffers from type 1 diabetes.

The two groups agreed to support Gemma’s efforts to raise awareness of the disease during Diabetes Awareness Week.

Gemma led an awareness-raising assembly and money was raised from the sale of diabetes bracelets.

St Bartholomew’s senior teacher Jackie Hutchinson said: “I think many of the children were surprised by how much diabetes can affect you and how even young children can learn to manage it.”

Farming delivers for Lincolnshire

A new campaign to highlight the importance of farming and horticulture to Lincolnshire has been launched by the NFU.

The farming organisation’s ‘Farming Delivers for Lincolnshire’ campaign explains the industry’s role, not just in producing safe, high quality food for the nation, but in caring for the environment, contributing to renewable energy supplies and offering an exciting range of careers in the agri-food industry.

“Lincolnshire is rightly known as the larder of England as we produce huge quantities of wheat, potatoes, sugar beet, pork, poultry products and vegetables,” says NFU’s regional director Richard Hezlet. “But we are also the nation’s florist, growing more than 40 per cent of the country’s cut flowers and bulbs, with a flower packing and distribution industry unrivalled anywhere else in the UK. Our research into farming and horticulture’s place in Lincolnshire’s economy, environment and food production shows just how important agriculture is as an industry and we’ve unearthed some surprising facts too!

“For example, more than 14,500 people are employed directly by our farming businesses, but that figure is more than doubled by the vast numbers of jobs in the ‘upstream’ industries based around our farming production. Increasingly focused on adding value, Lincolnshire’s packers, processors, wholesalers, hauliers, manufacturers and importers service an industry worth more than £1.3 billion at the farm gate and provide a whole network of businesses supporting and supported by farming and horticulture.

“The quality and range of produce we grow and rear in our beautiful county is amazing,” says Richard Hezlet. “And it is the countryside that is at the heart of it all. From the rolling Wolds to the big-skied fens, Lincolnshire’s fertile soils are home not just to farming and horticulture, but to wildlife too. More than three quarters of Lincolnshire’s farmland is cared for in environmental schemes; 7,500 miles of public rights of way wend their way through our fields, and our homes and businesses are protected by a network of 3,450 miles of drains maintained and operated by the Internal Drainage Boards. This vital, interactive web of food production, nature and careful management makes Lincolnshire what it is today.”

Spalding may get a new Costa Coffee shop in the former Burton menswear store, which closed on Saturday.

Acca Ltd are seeking planning consent to run the outlet on a franchise arrangement.

A planning application has been submitted to South Holland District Council for a change of use of the Hall Place building as well as the installation of a new shop front.

It’s planned the unit will sell coffee and other hot and cold drinks, food including sandwiches and cakes, and coffee equipment such as cafetieres and percolators.

Costa already has a shop at Springfields Retail Outlet.

Families’ joy at u-turn on surgery centre closure

The prospect of child heart surgeries continuing at a world-leading East Midlands hospital has left South Holland families relieved and delighted this week.

A plan to close the children’s heart surgery centre at Glenfields Hospital, Leicester, and two other centres in England has been thrown out by the Government after a damning review of the original recommendation.

An independent panel set up by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to review changes proposed in a report published last July called Safe and Sustainable Review of Children’s Heart Services said the plan to close Glenfields was based on “flawed analysis.”

But the future of the centre, which provides the pioneering ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment to patients, is still uncertain after Mr Hunt ordered NHS bosses to draw up revised plans for child heart surgeries in England by the end of July.

Paul Twell (39), of Gosberton Risegate, who along with his daughter Edie (4) had surgery at Glenfields, said: “It’s fantastic news and we’re delighted that common sense has prevailed in that the Government has finally realised that these specialist hospitals need to be local to people.

“Glenfields Hospital offers a fantastic service and its staff have helped us and so many other families in getting back to perfect health.”

Jonny Nightingale (15), of Millfield Gardens, Crowland, was diagnosed with a heart defect which could have caused sudden adult death syndrome before being offered treatment both at Glenfields and London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital where he was operated on in March 2011.

His dad, Kevin Nightingale (45) said: “We went to Great Ormond Street Hospital because it’s world-renowned but it didn’t matter where we went as long as my son got sorted out.

“We’re very pleased with the Government’s decision because if child heart care units like Glenfields close down, how are other hospitals going to cope?”

An inquiry of child heart surgery centres in England was originally launched by the former Labour Government in 1998 after 35 babies and children were known to have died through failings at Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Lawyer Sir Ian Kennedy, who chaired the inquiry panel, recommended that child heart surgeries should be concentrated in a small number of specialist centres and the Safe and Sustainable review’s proposals were made as a result.

But there was outrage when the recommendation to close Glenfields became public in July 2012 and as a result of a 110,000-name online petition, a parliamentary debate took place in October 2012 which led to the recommendation being suspended.

Christer Larsson (32), of Stonegate, Spalding, who backed the petition and whose daughter Sofia (3) had life-saving surgery at Glenfields, said: “I’m very pleased the Government has decided to carry out a proper review, especially given all the things parents were saying.

“Now we know Sofia is going to continue getting the great care she’s had at Glenfields and that’s good news.

“But now there’s another wait to see what the NHS is
going to do next and we wonder what its plans are going to be now.”

Over 500 homes targeted to raise recycling rates

A door-to-door campaign is underway to improve the district’s record on recycling.

Officers for South Holland District Council have been visiting areas where there are high levels of “contamination” – where non-recycleable items are put out for collection in green bags.

Environmental wardens have already knocked on more than 500 doors across the district, explaining to residents why recycling collectors may have marked the green bags they have left beside the road with a yellow sticker.

It is part of a concentrated education programme by the council, which has been started following the award of £1.7million from the Government.

The “Pickles Pot” money – granted by Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles last November – will also be used to replace the council’s fleet of ageing recycling trucks.

A new education officer has also been employed, who has already started visiting schools to teach children about recycling.

Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for waste management, said: “As part of our bid for the Pickles money we said we wanted to raise recycling rates and to do that we need to reduce the contamination rate of recycling that is put out for collection, as well as encourage people to recycle more.

“The guys doing the collection are the ones that spot when a bag is contaminated and mark it with a yellow sticker – often people put out small electrical items such as toasters.

“Where we have ‘hotspots’ of this happening – often in areas where people come and go a lot, such as flats on short-term leases – we have been sending in people to knock on doors and educate people.

“The new officer is also going into schools, because we know from evidence at other councils that pester power from children is another effective way of getting the message across to their parents.”

Recycling is worth a lot of money to the council after it signed a three-year deal in 2012 to sell plastics, glass and paper it gathers for £500,000 a year.

Traders keep their legs crossed that leaky toilets are finally fixed

Shopkeepers in Spalding town centre were feeling flush last week because nearby car park toilets were open.

According to business owners in The Crescent, the men’s and women’s toilets in Vine Street have been closed more times than not since before Christmas.

This has not only left customers travelling into town cross-legged, but some of the shopkeepers too.

Parkys Pranks owner Gary Parkinson runs one of two shops along The Crescent without any staff toilet facilities.

He said: “It’s made it really difficult for us, but what is more important is it’s an inconvenience to customers. We pay enough rates down here and it should be sorted.”

Karen Scotney, who owns the Candy Bar next door which is also without a toilet, said: “If I need to go I use the council offices or nip across the road to Bookmark. It’s nice that they let me go there.

“The toilets have only been open odd days since Christmas. People are not going to park here if the toilets are out of use.

“I’ve been to the council so many times I feel sorry for the receptionist, but it does make things difficult.”

Amanda Clark, of Once Again dress agency, said when the toilets were out of order it especially caused problems for the elderly and disabled.

She said: “People come in here and ask where they can go. It’s no good directing them to the Sheepmarket because they can’t park there, which leaves the bus station.

“The council needs to look after the basic things and if there’s a problem with the toilets they need to put in temporary ones. We don’t need any distraction from people coming into Spalding.”

Tracey Graves, of Rumblings to Go, said a lot of customers asked where the toilets were.

She said: “There needs to be better signage. It’s frustrating when you find them and they are closed.”

A spokesman for South Holland District Council said: “There has been a sporadic leak at the toilets, but we have been trying to get to the bottom of the problem and they are open.”
