SOUTH Holland’s Flower Queen Amy Harrison is in Jersey taking part in the holiday island’s famous Battle of Flowers today.
Amy (18), the first ambassador from Spalding’s big event to accept the Jersey invitation for five years, accompanied by her boyfriend Trevor Wain.
She said on Tuesday: “It might be hard to top our own Flower Parade day, but I’m really looking forward to it.
“It’s exciting to be going somewhere new. We’re planning to explore the island on Saturday before we come home.”
Amy will be riding on a float in two Jersey parades - today’s main Battle of Flowers event and the Moonlight Parade tomorrow night.
She took with her the ice-blue gown she wore at the Flower Parade and her prom gown to ring the changes.
She may also renew her aquaintance with last year’s Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers Rebecca Houze, who rode a float at Spalding’s event in May.
Amy left Spalding Grammar School this summer and is awaiting A Level results. She plans to get a job this year, hoping to study to become a paramedic at university from next September.
The last time anyone from South Holland took part in the Battle of Flowers it was deputy Flower Queen Joanna Coaton, who headed a sizeable delegation to Jersey in August 2007.
Jan Whitbourn of Tulip Radio, at the time a Flower Parade trustee, went along. She said: “The Flower Queen Rebecca Rayner wasn’t able to go so her deputy went instead.
“It was a fantastic experience.
“I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping against hope that our Flower Parade is going to be saved.
“If it is, I think we could learn from the way the Battle of Flowers is run, as a competition between villages, with every village community from grandparents to little children involved in making their float the best.”
