KIDS getting fed up with summer holidays at home will find an antidote to boredom at Holbeach Library.
Story Time at 2pm on Friday afternoons for younger children turns into free-for-all fun to include older siblings when school’s out.
Last Friday it was popular tale Mother Knows Best by Jill Murphy, and storyteller Jo Baguely from Lincolnshire Library Service brought along her guitar to add music to the words.
She said: “I do Story Time at Holbeach a lot and there’s a whole different atmosphere in the school holidays as older brothers and sisters come along to join in too.
“I look over at the mums who have brought their children to it and you can see them relax and enjoy the half-hour’s break.
“But mostly it’s a great way of introducing children to reading and borrowing books.”
Toddlers can be signed up from babyhood for the Bookstart Bear Club aimed at giving them the library habit.
New members get a join-up folder full of goodies and their own club passport.
Every time they visit the library, a black bear’s pawprint is stamped into the passport, leading to a prize certificate when they’ve got six stamps.
And they can come in and get stuck in to craft activities in the Junior Library area as well as choose books to borrow, or just sit and read, any time the library’s open which is at least part of every day except Tuesday and Sunday. Older children who are readers already can still sign up for the summer reading scheme that’s this year called the Story Lab.
The aim of Story Labbers is to visit the library three times over the school holidays, choosing at least two books (either fiction or non-fiction) each time, and say what they think about their choices in a short review.
