Representatives of the Ermine Street Guard in full Roman military dress are expected to join a ceremony in Spalding paying tribute to the late historian Peter Connolly, who was their honorary president.
The latest in a series of blue plaques erected by Spalding and District Civic Society is to be unveiled at the historian’s former home at 22 Spring Street at 12 noon on Saturday, December 15.
Former Grammar School pupil Ed Fordham orchestrated fundraising for the plaque and hopes friends, neighbours and other South Holland residents will attend the ceremony, which is to be followed by light refreshments at Spalding Grammar School.
Ed, who had hoped that Sam Moorhead of the British Museum or Mary Beard of TV fame might also attend, said: “Peter, who lived for over 20 years in Spring Street, was a significant and influential national historian and experimental archaeologist of the ancient world writing on the Greeks, the Romans, the Greek myths and on Jesus of Nazareth.
“He died earlier in the year and friends and colleagues have come together to raise the money for a plaque in his memory on his house. Peter was well known in many local schools and libraries for his vivid demonstrations of ancient military equipment including chain mail shirts, a horse pommel and saddle and of course swords, spears and shields.”
