Local MP John Hayes will vote against legalising gay marriages.

The energy minister, who is MP for South Holland and the Deepings, has been airing his views in a debate taking the country’s mind off the state of the economy.

Joan Woolard, of Fleet Hargate, wrote to Mr Hayes in support of a campaign run by the Family Education Trust, which was concerned about government plans to legalise same-sex marriage.

She said: “It would depreciate the value of marriage.”

Mr Hayes replied: “I shall be voting against changing the law to introduce marriage between homosexuals. I believe marriage should be a union between a man and a woman.

“I have always been a passionate supporter of the institution of marriage – it provides the best environment for children and families and provides a stable foundation for the wider society, too.

“We can trace the roots of many of Britain’s social problems today to a decline in marriages, as well as an increase in divorces.”

Plans to allow same-sex marriages, which are backed by Labour, are due to be introduced by the Government before the next election, in 2015.

Supporters cite a number of reasons for wanting gay marriage, including that separate civil partnerships perpetuate the notion that same-sex relationships are not as valid as heterosexual ones and that legal rights are still not exactly the same as those conferred by marriage.

Home Secretary Theresa May and Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said: “Put simply, it’s not right that a couple who love each other and want to formalise a commitment to each other should be denied the right to marry.”

On Tuesday, the Government announced that the Church of England and Church in Wales would be banned in law from offering same-sex marriages.

It said other religious organisations would be able to “opt in” to holding ceremonies but because the Church of England and Church in Wales had “explicitly stated” strong opposition to offering same-sex ceremonies, they would not be included.

Legal experts are concerned the European Court on Human Rights (ECHR) – the Strasbourg tribunal where Europeans can appeal verdicts by their domestic courts – could override a national ruling.

In June, a Spalding clergyman warned the Church of England could stop conducting all marriages if a new law allowed same sex couples to wed in church.

The Rev John Bennett, from St Mary and St Nicolas, said the union between a man and a woman – together with the procreation of children – was enshrined in the church service.

A couple from the Spalding area are confident the law will eventually change and are holding out for that time to name the day.

One of the partners said: “A lot of gay couples have had to fight harder to be together and have a much greater chance of having a stable relationship.

“Those who are against it on religious grounds should remember that where there is love, there is God.”
