Work has begun to create South Holland’s new £2million crematorium.
Builders have moved onto the site just off the A151 link road north of Surfleet and it is hoped the site will be operational next autumn.
Once complete, the day to day running of South Lincolnshire Crematorium will be taken over by Lincolnshire Co-operative, creating up to four jobs.
Over the next few months, the site will begin to take shape – at the hands of local building contractors D Brown (Building Contractors) Ltd, based in Moulton.
One of the developers, Andrew Bowser said: “We have started work on the new crematorium using local contractors.
“The extensive landscaping will be completed this winter and the building work will start in the spring.
“This facility is very much needed for the growing population of South Holland and will reduce the travel times for mourners.
“Above all it will be a new local facility that we hope will make the experience better for bereaved families at a very difficult time.”
Currently there is no crematorium facility in South Holland and bereaved families face a journey of an hour or more, often in heavy traffic, to reach those in Boston, Peterborough or King’s Lynn.
Features of the new crematorium will include:
l 10 acre parkland setting with landscaped memorial gardens
l 80 seater chapel with covered flower court
l a 2.5 acre wild flower meadow, providing an area of bio-diversity
l the latest environmentally audited equipment, with fully filtered emissions (which compare favourably with the emissions of a car)
l the cremator will be able to take larger 44 inch coffins
l one hour service times will be offered – many others only offer 30 minute slots.
l capacity for up to five services a day.
