‘Back to basics’ for town’s Christmas celebrations

This year’s Christmas celebrations in Spalding town centre could go “back to basics” as part of a major rethink.

Although it was felt that the 2012 event, which included a school choir singing competition, went smoothly, members of Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce questioned whether a similar event should be held this year, particularly as “crowd control” issues had been raised.

At the chamber’s latest meeting last week, president Phil Scarlett said the visibility of the stage was a problem and the location meant the festivities were “fighting” with the town’s market.

Members discussed whether the event should continue to be held on a Saturday, or if it should move to a Friday, Sunday or even become a three day event.

Principle organiser of the event Jan Whitbourn said the choir competition, although a success, was hard work to run as teachers were sometimes reluctant to get involved with an extra activity outside of school hours at what was already a busy time of year.

But a suggestion that the event was stripped back to basics and centred around Santa was well received by members, as was the suggestion of carol singing round the Christmas tree.

Mr Scarlett also said he hoped the town’s new Christmas lights, which had received positive feedback, could be extended this year if more money could be found.
