Bandstand talks bringing plan nearer

A Party in the Park could be on the cards for Spalding in the future following talks to be held next week.

Until now there has been no outside venue for bands and the town has missed out on musical events such as those held in Donington and Holbeach.

However, following a plea from Spalding Town Form, a meeting is to be held to prepare paperwork to apply for section 106 money from the Springfields retail development and provide a bandstand in Ayscoughfee Gardens.

It is estimated the bandstand could cost between £12,000 and £30,000, depending on its size and design.

Members of the Town Forum first came up with the idea in August last year when the plan was considered as a contender for its £27,000 underspend.

Since then, it has remained on the agenda as a project spearheaded by Couns Graham Dark and Harold Johnson.

Coun Dark said he knew of several brass bands keen to play in Ayscoughfee Gardens and this would be an attraction for residents who went there for relaxation.

Coun Roger Gambba-Jones reminded members it was important any design that was agreed did not compromise Ayscoughfee Hall, as it was a listed building.

However, Coun Johnson said it was good the forum was now in a position to take the plan forward and apply for funds.

He said: “Other towns have a bandstand and I think it would be an great asset for Ayscoughfee Gardens.

“It could be a venue for an event like a Party in the Park as well as for brass bands.

“We’ll be looking at it being big enough for 20 to 30 people and installing electricity as we’ve been told of groups that may want to use it.

“At the moment it is difficult to put a timescale on it, but I’d like to think it will be in place by midummer.”
