Spalding’s high street has suffered another blow with news that men’s clothing store Burtons is to close in the summer.
The Arcadia group, owners of the Burton brand, said the decision had been taken as a result of the lease on the shop expiring at the end of June.
A spokesman said every effort would be made to redeploy the shop’s staff to other stores.
Phil Scarlett, president of Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce, said Arcadia’s decision to close the Spalding shop was “disappointing” but hoped the landlord would “aggressively advertise” the shop to get it filled again as soon as possible.
He said he believed the decision not to renew the lease may be connected to the size of the shop, which would possibly be at the bottom end of the chain’s size requirements.
Mr Scarlett added: “The problem we have with many of the shops in Market Place is that they are too small for many of the big high street retailers.”
