Spalding students who were challenged to their limits had a golden moment when they were rewarded.

A special presentation evening was held on Friday for 36 High School students who have received their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The awards were presented by Roxanne Stanyon, a holder of a gold award and volunteer for the scheme.

Richard Garbett, bronze award leader at the school, said students had undergone an extensive period of training before their two expeditions, covering such essential skills as navigation, map-reading and compass work, camp craft, first aid and emergency procedures.

They also completed a personal programme of activities, including volunteering, physical activity and a skills section.

Brittany Sharman, who received her bronze award at the evening, said: “I found DofE really enjoyable and it was a worthwhile experience.

“The volunteering, physical and skills sections of it taught me to cooperate with new people.

“I loved the expeditions as it brought me closer to my friends.

“We overcame getting lost and now laugh about it. I just want to go back and do it again.”
