A man convicted of assaulting his wife during a “tussle in the kitchen” must pay her £100 in compensation.

Katherine Ferguson was injured at her home in Woodview, Bourne, when she and her husband, Mark, had a row in the early hours of the morning.

Mark Ferguson (35), of Oakham, pleaded guilty to common assault when he appeared before Spalding magistrates on March 14.

At Thursday’s resumed hearing, he was sentenced to 24 months’ supervision by the probation service with a requirement to attend a programme called “Better Building Relationships”.

He must also pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

At the earlier hearing, prosecutor John Clare read from Mrs Ferguson’s statement in which she described being pushed in the chest, punched in the face and falling against a kitchen table.

Solicitor Mike Alexander said Ferguson denied punching her, but accepted his wife’s injuries resulted from her colliding with the table during a tussle in the kitchen.

Mr Alexander said Ferguson had attended a domestic abuse programme as a result of an earlier assault on his wife and that helped him to walk away as soon as he realised she was injured in the latest incident. They intend to live together again in “due course”.
