A MOTORCYCLIST caught speeding at 156mph has been convicted of dangerous driving.

Peter Clarke has been banned for 18 months and ordered to pay £2,000.

Clarke (44) was followed by police for eight minutes on the northbound section of the A1M between Alconbury and Sawtry in Cambridgeshire on May 12 last year.

In his defence at Peterborough Crown Court, Clarke said he was in total control of his motorcycle at all times and that it was built for speed.

Recorder Miss McAllister said it was “reckless driving threatening others”.

She said he had shown a total disregard for the safety of others on a known section of hazardous road.

The prosecution said passing other vehicles on the inside (undertaking) twice and failing to observe the police motorcycle while travelling at excessive speeds amounted to dangerous driving.

Clarke, of Broadgate, Sutton St Edmund, insisted that he was an experienced rider and that speed did not constitute dangerous driving.

He was fined and ordered to pay costs.
