Crowland grower Janet Herbert is part of a group of local farmers who have formed a bird friendly zone to help local wildlife.
Many farmland birds have declined at a worrying rate with over half of skylarks lost since 1970, while turtle doves are likely to disappear from the UK by 2020 without help.
The farmers – who call themselves the Thorney Farmland Bird Friendly Zone – are working with the RSPB to farm more sensitively, giving nature a home while still producing crops.
Janet says: “It really melts the heart to watch flocks of little songbirds cheerfully playing over a field of wild bird seed mix, searching out seeds and insects.
“Undertaking stewardship as an individual farmer is certainly rewarding, but to also be part of the Thorney Farmland Bird Friendly Zone is even more fantastic because working together the benefits to birds and wildlife are increased enormously.”
Now the RSPB want to share what’s been happening with the public and have issued an invitation for people to hear a presentation and visit a farm.
The presentation is on September 24 at Bedford Hall, Thorney (7pm to 9pm) and the free farm visit is on September 28.
