A drink-driver sustained a head injury and went to hospital when he wrote off his car in an early morning crash on the A17 outside the Farm Lodge Cafe at Fleet.

Karl Rose (40) had been to a party in Wisbech, where he works, and had intended to stay the night in a hotel.

His solicitor, Anita Toal, told Spalding magistrates he got separated from the friends he was going to stay with, spent several hours in his car and then took “the foolish decision to drive home”.

Mrs Toal said: “Obviously he is bitterly ashamed and he finds himself in court today.”

Rose, of Belton Close, Boston, pleaded guilty to driving with 162 milligrammes of alcohol in blood – just over double the legal limit – and was banned from driving for 18 months.

He was fined £400 and must pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

He can cut four months off the ban if he completes a rehabilitation course.

Prosecutor Jim Clare said Rose crashed his Astra at 5.45am on June 15, hitting the nearside kerb before skidding and colliding with the central island.
