School run parents are hogging spaces in a private car park they are not allowed to use – and blocking access to it by parking on the road.
Fed-up residents of Browne- Wilkinson Walk at Holbeach St Marks want a barrier installed across the entrance so they can get to their cars and also allow access for emergency vehicles like ambulances.
Coun Peter Savory told Holbeach Parish Council an ambulance was called recently and the patient had to be wheeled on a trolley for some distance because the access was blocked.
He asked members to support double-yellow lines going in so ambulances would have somewhere to pull up.
Coun Savory said: “The car park is being used more and more by the school, but it’s private property – the school do know they are not allowed to use it.”
He said parents everywhere on the school run seem to think they are more important than anybody else.
“The residents are talking about putting a barrier up across the car park and I hope they do,” said Coun Savory. “I wish the police would come along more and police it more.”
County and district councillor Nick Worth told the meeting he was chairman of governors at the primary school for many years until recently and letters regularly go out to parents telling them not to park in the residents’ car park, which is owned by the Lincolnshire Rural Housing Association.
Coun Worth said: “It’s in the hands of the housing association – it’s not parish council business really.”
He said parking is available for parents at the village hall.
The parish council agreed to raise the problem with the housing association while Coun Paul Foyster said more policing could be the answer.
Coun Foyster said: “A uniform sometimes works wonders among people who are a bit obstreperous.”
