Villagers urged to stand for election

VILLAGERS are being urged to stand for election to bring “new blood” to a parish council.

More than ten electors have requested that an election is held to fill the vacancy on Moulton ward created by the resignation last month of Paul Winn.

Mr Winn chose to stand down after claiming he had had enough of “hassle” from villagers.

Moulton Parish Council has been dogged by friction between councillors and members of the public since an auditing error which led to around £61,500 going unclaimed in VAT.

At a parish council meeting on Monday, Coun Andrew Woolf urged residents to put themselves forward as candidates.

He said: “I am pleased there is going to be an election as it shows that some people care about the village and I hope people do put themselves forward.

“It is going to cost taxpayers money to hold this election so I hope the electors who have requested an election have done so for the right reasons and not just to be awkward.”

Members discussed the possible costs of holding the election, such as hiring a hall for the day and staffing it, and believed it could total around £1,000.

Posters will soon go up around Moulton to publicise the election and give details of what prospective candidates need to do.

Coun Geoff Cooper said: “The council definitely needs new blood.”

The council also decided at its meeting to “move into the 21st century” by creating its own website.

Coun David Goad told members he has discovered a way of creating a simple site for a very low cost.

He said: “I have done a website for my wife’s business and I think I could do one for the council virtually free.”

Coun Goad suggested a domain name and said members would be able to update the website easily with relevant information such as parish council agendas and minutes, as well as forthcoming events and photographs.

Members approved the idea, but said content should be approved by the council.
