Farmers and contractors are being urged to share their views as part of the government’s consultation examining trailer weights and speeds.

Following years of NFU lobbying, the consultation will seek opinion on increasing the weight and speed limits for agricultural vehicles, something that will allow farmers to transport produce more efficiently.

Views are being sought on whether to increase the speed limit to 25mph and whether the weight limit for tractors and trailers should be increased to 31 tonnes, 33 tonnes or 37 tonnes (for a tri-axle trailer with road friendly suspension).

In order to qualify for the increased weights a voluntary industry-led test is proposed.

The NFU is urging members to respond as individuals to the consultation, and in particular to let the government know if the 31 tonne weight is too low.

Share your views before the end of the month by email at tractorspeedlimit@dft.gsi.gov.uk or in the NFU response to ben.ellis@nfu.org.uk
