A NEW website ‘form’ has gone live so thousands of South Holland residents can register an interest in a mass switch to cheaper gas and electricity.
All you need to do is visit www.sholland.gov.uk and click on the ‘Fairer Fuel for All’ news item and follow the simple steps on screen.
People without internet access can register via their ward councillor or at the council head office in Priory Road, Spalding.
The big switch is being piloted by South Holland council leader Gary Porter, who is furious with energy companies profiting to the tune of £125 a year for every single home.
He wants to see thousands sign-up – because more numbers signing will mean lower bills.
British Gas has now said it will talk to him in the new year and the council is seeking meetings with smaller energy companies in a bid to secure price cuts.
Coun Porter’s idea has won support from Government departments, including the Department for Energy and Climate Control, and a report will be prepared by those departments in April.
But Coun Porter wants to see something happen quicker than that.
When he first announced his plans Coun Porter said “it is getting to the point where somebody has got to start to kick these people”.
Yesterday, Coun Porter said: “Can I apologise to anyone who was upset by the language that I used but I make no apology for the anger that provoked this.
“I am truly dismayed that we are all being taken for a ride by ‘the big six’ energy companies and I feel that the language used truly reflects this.
“It was necessary to be as provocative as I could to maximise the chances of the story getting resonance on a wider level.
“Some Lincolnshire Free Press readers will be aware that this has worked because the story has been covered by national radio and as a result British Gas are happy to have a meeting in the new year to talk through my proposals.
“We are also trying to arrange meetings with ‘the little six’ to see if there is a way a fixed volume contract is possible/desirable from their end of the market.”
