A MAN was double the drink drive limit the night he decided it was too risky to leave his van parked up with £4,500 worth of tools in the back.

But driving cost him a 20-month ban after a policeman stopped him on Bridge Street, Deeping St James.

Celfyn John (31), of Neaverson Road, Glinton, Peterborough, admitted being at the wheel with 71 microgrammes of alcohol in breath.

He was fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge. The ban will be cut by five months if he completes a rehabilitation course.

Rebecca Ritson, prosecuting, said John was stopped at 1.10am on Sunday, March 18 by a police officer who thought he was driving too fast.

Solicitor Daven Naghen, mitigating, said John ended up having more to drink than planned because he found out it was a mate’s birthday.

At the end of the night, he decided it was too risky to leave all the tools for his business in the van.
