ALMOST £41,000 was handed over to community groups and projects in South Holland by councillors in the final month of the financial year.

The whopping sum was given as part of the Designated Councillors’ Budget scheme in March, which allows each South Holland district councillor to put money towards projects of their choosing.

r Coun Gary Taylor, of Spalding Castle ward, donated more than half of his £4,000 yearly allowance to give £2,561.88 to the town’s police constables and community support officers.

The cash will be used to buy specialist bicycles to use on patrols.

r Councillors Angela Newton, Andrew Miller, Graham Dark, Roger Gambba-Jones, Christine Lawton, George Aley, Gary Porter, Howard Johnson, Roger Perkins, David Ashby and Gary Taylor pooled their funds to give £2,455.08 to buy equipment for Spalding in Bloom.

The cash will get 50 new hanging baskets and seven new barrier baskets.

r Donington, Quadring and Gosberton ward councillor Robert Clark used almost his entire pot of cash with two big donations last month.

He gave a £2,000 contribution to works in Quadring Church Hall, and a further £1,700 to allow usage of disabled facilities in the village hall.

r The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations have been given a boost by several councillors.

Holbeach Hurn’s residents will enjoy a £500 donation for a community event from Coun Nick Worth, while councillors Andrew Woolf, Anthony Casson and Rodney Grocock put £1,275 to a dance and sports afternoon.

Crowland and Deeping St Nicholas councillors Bryan Alcock, Angela Harrison and Paul Przyszlak put their cash together to give £1,000 for the celebrations in Crowland.

Coun Michael Seymour, of The Saints ward, handed over £450 to hire a coach to take children to see the Olympic torch pass through the district and provide commemorative coins, and a further £250 for the Sutton St James Diamond Jubilee committee.

Councillors Sally Slade, Elizabeth Sneath and James Avery also dipped in to provide a Jubilee coin to each child at West Pinchbeck St Bartholomew’s and Pinchbeck East primary schools with a £1,075.75 donation.

Spalding Monkshouse representatives Angela Newton and George Aley also followed suit with an £800 grant for coins.

Children at five of Spalding’s primary schools will benefit from a slice of Coun Graham Dark’s budget, with £300 each towards activities at Spalding Primary, St John the Baptist, Parish Day, St Norbert’s and Monkshouse primary schools.

r Volunteers behind restoration work at Moulton Mill will also receive £750 from Couns Casson, Grocock and Woolf.

The total spend for the month was £40,887.92.
