SPALDING and Peterborough Transport Forum is in talks with East Midlands Trains over “adopting” Spalding Railway Station gardens.
Forum chairman George Scott said the railway company has already indicated it will look favourably on the plan.
Gardening expert Daphne Ledward, a forum patron, will take the lead in designing the planting scheme if the adoption goes ahead, but the group is appealing for volunteers to help with the work.
Another topic high on the forum’s agenda is its campaign for a Sunday train service between Spalding and Peterborough and talks are due to be held at the end of next week.
The forum is also negotiating with the railway company to get a pedestrian access to the station from Park Road.
The group has been campaigning for a bus stop opposite the station, but that’s been ruled out by Lincolnshire County Council on highway safety grounds.
Mr Scott and member David Hurdle are now seeking a meeting with Michael Moran, the Holland Market manager, to ensure better bus stops get built into the design before the area is redeveloped.
The forum held its annual meeting on Saturday at South Holland District Council’s headquarters in Spalding.
South Holland and The Deepings MP John Hayes, the forum president, is to meet East Midlands Trains and South Holland Radio to discuss progress on the long-planned refurbishment of the station.
Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum has campaigned for the last few years for the reopening of Littleworth Railway Station at Deeping St Nicholas.
Mr Scott said: “We have raised approximately £13,000 at the moment to go ahead with a full professional feasibility study and survey with a view to that reopening again.”
He said the move is supported by the station owner, Deeping St Nicholas Parish Council and Deeping St James Parish Council has just come on board.
