COMMENT: Please help with voluntary clean-up in Spalding

IT’s great to see all the good work from Spalding In Bloom on display with the hanging baskets and troughs now in situ throughout the town.

This, along with the bunting, which will remain in place throughout the summer, helped ensure the town looked its best for the recent jubilee celebrations and will remain so for the forthcoming Britain In Bloom judging and the Olympic torch passing through in early July.

In preparation for these events, we are arranging another ‘voluntary clean-up’ on Sunday, July 1.

I know the last one got rained off but we’ve ordered good weather this time so fingers crossed!

We meet and start at Bookmark in The Crescent with sessions in the morning (10am-noon) and afternoon (2pm-4pm). Full details can be found on our website www.spaldingareachamber.co.uk.

Please put this date in your diary and help out if at all possible – the difference that can be made in just a couple of hours is amazing, it’s true that many hands make light work!

The Chamber was pleased to see the publicity regarding Spalding Civic Society’s Vision for the Town’s Future in the Lincolnshire Free Press last Tuesday May 29, a vision that broadly speaking we’re in agreement with.

In support of this, we at the Chamber have pro-actively begun discussions with South Holland District Council regarding projects in the town that could potentially be funded by Section 106 monies from the proposed Holland Market development.

It’s been made clear that Section 106 monies are to be used to mitigate any perceived negative impact from a development, and our main priority is that the whole of the town centre is strengthened, not threatened by any development.

We have therefore suggested projects such as (not necessarily in order of priority) improving the walkway between Holland Market and the rest of the town centre, a permanent covered market and high level wrought-iron signage to identify niche shopping areas such as The Crescent, Red Lion Street, Pied Calf Yard, etc.

We’ve also suggested a dedicated town centre manager to co-ordinate retailers, events, marketing and the general upkeep of the town, and extending the Food Festival into a much larger event to promote the town.

We look forward to feedback from Corbo and the district council and, of course, to seeing the much anticipated plans for the project in due course.

If you run a business in South Holland there are many benefits to becoming a member of Spalding and District Area Chamber, the district’s strongest business network.

Please browse our website www.spaldingareachamber.co.uk for further details.

Membership brings many benefits and costs from as little as £95, which represents incredible value for money.
