RESIDENTS of Sutton Bridge will soon have somewhere to spend a penny after being without public loos since before Christmas.
Sutton Bridge Parish Council heard on Tuesday that South Holland District Council is now prepared to provide the £2,500 annual cleaning fee so members of the public can use the toilets at The Curlew Centre.
The nearby district council owned toilets were shut after they were vandalised.
The water supply to flush those loos is off but disabled users have still been getting in to the block using special radar keys.
Parish council chairman John Grimwood has been stepping in to the breach to clean the disabled loo and says everyone in the village will be pleased the cash has come through so they can use the toilets at The Curlew Centre.
He said: “It’s a facility that we desperately need, especially the older people when they come up town from St Matthew’s Drive.
“We get a lot of visitors that come here.”
Coun Grimwood said there’s a finger sign board on the bridge advertising the public toilets but people walking up to The Memorial Park have found the district council owned toilets locked.
News that the district council is paying up was given to the parish council on Tuesday by parish and district councillor Michael Booth.
But no start date has been given for the centre’s loos to open to the public.
Asked if he knew a start date, Coun Grimwood replied: “It’s South Holland District Council. How long is a piece of string? I have got no idea.”
