Stationery savings to pay for grass cutting

MEASURES to improve safety on a Pinchbeck road used by schoolchildren are to be taken by parish councillors.

Grass cutting on Market Way is to take place on a monthly basis after councillors agreed to spend about £300 on improving visibility for motorists and making it safer for children walking to Pinchbeck East Primary School.

The money will come from savings to be made on postage and stationery costs after councillors agreed at a meeting last Monday to have agendas and minutes sent by email.

Residents have been campaigning for a new footpath on Market Way, along with a cyclepath for Pennytoft Lane where an 83-year-old man came off his bike and died three weeks ago.

Lincolnshire County Council has so far refused to go ahead with the work, claiming that the number of reported accidents on the road are insufficient to justify it.

Figures from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership show that there have only been four accidents on Market Way since its records began in 1985.

Parish council chairman Andrew Bowser said: “We have been campaigning for at least six years for a footpath to be created on Market Way and traffic calming measures on Pennytoft Lane.

“Therefore, we’re using money saved from our postage and stationery budget to cut the grass verge on Market Way 12 times a year to decrease the chance of accidents.”

A county council spokeswoman said: “We do build a number of footpaths and cycleways every year, each one being assessed on a number of criteria, including the number of collisions on the road.

“Market Way has been assessed for a footpath several times but is unlikely to be considered a priority in the near future.”
