MP in fight over lights plan

MP John Hayes is calling on the county council to scrap a traffic lights scheme that’s “better suited to London than Market Deeping”.

The South Holland and The Deepings MP spoke out over a plan to replace a Godsey Lane traffic island – known as the Tesco roundabout – with seven sets of traffic lights at a cost of £900,000.

The scheme is due to be funded by a housing developer, but Deeping St James Parish Council chairman Phil Dilks says the cash would be better spent on projects to benefit the community.

Coun Dilks said planners had blundered by allowing the entrance to a new housing estate to be 20 metres or so away from the roundabout.

County council executive member for highways Coun William Webb called a temporary halt to the scheme following protests from Deeping St James Parish Council and Market Deeping Town Council.

Bus company Delaine was set to axe its 102 Godsey Lane service because of the scheme but Mr Hayes says that has been reinstated following the county’s announcement that it will put work on hold.

Mr Hayes said Delaine has a history of listening to and responding to people’s concerns. The MP has vowed to work with local councillors to fight for local people.
