Emergency services rescued an injured drink driver after she lost control and her car shot across the road into a ditch.

Fire crews and police were called to the accident at Hull’s Drove and Postland Road, Crowland, at 11.45am on March 30.

Joanne Elam (40) was freed from the Ford Focus and taken to Peterborough City Hospital and still faces surgery following the crash.

Jim Clare, prosecuting, said a sample was taken which revealed 102 milligrammes of alcohol in 100mls of blood – the legal limit is 80mgs.

He said Elam’s car was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

Solicitor Carrie Simson, mitigating, said Elam, who has no permanent address, travelled from Aberdeen to attend her court hearing on Thursday.

Mrs Simson described the incident as “quite a nasty accident”.

Elam’s injuries were aggravated by pre-existing arthritis and she must now have a full hip replacement and knee replacement.

She said: “The alignment of her body is incorrect.”

Magistrates imposed a ban of 13 months, fined Elam £110 and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

She pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
